The Hebrew Book of Matthew is the original gospel, first published in 40 AD. It is the cornerstone of what we now call Christianity. It is the only eye witness account of the Gospel by an Apostle. The Benai Emunah Institute has scoured the earth to locate and obtain dozens of surviving manuscripts of The Hebrew Gospels. Those have been transcribed, analyzed, and translated to give the best compilation, in fact the first and only, compilation of The Hebrew Gospel of Matthew! What a story The Hebrew Gospel of Matthew has to tell.
The followers of Yeshua “were first called Messianics in Antioch” (Hebrew Acts 11:26). Luke and Acts were written about 50 AD - granted there is much argument about that date. The first known reference to the “Chrestians” was by Nero who became Emperor after Luke’s writings - and it was later still before the “Chrestians” became officially known as “Christians.” That was beyond the time of Luke. In Hebrew Acts 12:4, Herod seized Peter in order to put him to death, “intending after Passover to bring him forth to the people.” In the Greek and English Bibles it usually says “Easter” which did not become an official Christian holiday, replacing Passover, until the fourth century under Emperor Constantine - who founded the Greco-Roman Church - and divorced it from the Jews and Messianics.
And so the story begins. In the first century, Yehovah - God of the Hebrews - sent his son Yeshua the Messiah to bring his Word and New Covenant doctrines, in Hebrew, to the world. Matthew and Luke were originally written in Hebrew and published in the first half of the first century. They were translated by the Greeks - who tweeked them to support the emerging Greek Church doctrine. The new Greek Church needed four things: A Greek God (Theos), a Greek Christ - (Jesus), Greek Scripture, and Greek doctrine. The Greeks rejected the Torah and the Covenant of Yehovah. This came to be called Replacement Theology and is still the operant doctrine of the Christian Church.
Yehovah became Theos (Deus, Dios, or LORD). Yeshua became Jesus. The New Covenant became the New Testament - and the Torah was replaced by Greek doctrine - a revision of the Word rather breath-taking in its extent! Words like “Christian” and “Easter” were backdated into the Bible to authenticate them - the names “Yehovah, Yeshua, Messianic, Torah and Menorah” vanished from the Word. Now we have recovered the original Hebrew Gospel.
There are approximately 100 surviving Hebrew manuscripts of all, or part of, The Brit Hadashah (Hebrew New Covenant - known to us as the New Testament). There are 5000 surviving Greek manuscripts. There are 10,000 surviving Latin manuscripts. There are (almost) zero versions of any of them which are identical. The reality is that all of these manuscripts will have Hebrew elements - and all of them will all have Greek elements! They will also have elements that come from other cultures they have passed through such as Latin or English. This is called “Acculturation.”
The task of the Benai Emunah Institute has been to determine what degree of Hebrew or Greek elements are predominant in each manuscript and what they tell us. We do this by establishing “markers” of The Hebrew texts. An example of one such marker is Matthew 5:18 - on the title page, “Not one yod from Torah… will pass away.” A marker says something in Hebrew that is not in the Greek. The Hebrew Book of Matthew is a faith-builder not a faith-breaker. The Hebrew Gospel is different from the Greek Gospel - and that difference speaks volumes. The truth will set you free.
Whatever your faith tradition - You have a right to know the original Hebrew words of Yeshua the Messiah!
