Denver District Attorney’s Office A History of Crime in the Mile High City (1869-2021) views the history of Denver through the lens of the highest-ranking officials in law enforcement. From Colorado before statehood to today, each district attorney is profiled as are notable cases they handled during their terms of office. Denver’s history is explored through the crimes of each era, which often reflect the attitudes and politics of the day. The first chapter begins in 1869 with Vincent Markham, the first district attorney, who served before Colorado achieved statehood. The book concludes in 2021 with Beth McCann, Denver’s first female district attorney.
The district attorney has always been an elected official. The district attorneys were never career prosecutors in the early years. Of the 29 district attorneys covered in this book, 20 served one term and 9 served two or more.
Similar crime themes run throughout Denver’s history: domestic violence, organized crime, murder, corruption, and the difficulties law enforcement have connecting with the community. Considerable research went into uncovering and compiling these true crime stories which can be shocking, sad, and even ridiculous. Famous characters from Bat Masterson to Bob Dylan appear when they ran afoul of the law. Denver District Attorney’s Office A History of Crime in the Mile High City (1869-2021) covers those topics as well as many more in describing the careers of Denver’s prosecutors.
