Law Enforcement, Corrections/Custody, 911 and other emergency services are noble professions. All who we knew and served with are proud of their profession. We certainly had our challenges, and sometimes lost some of our best. Many of our service friends are honestly thankful to have survived a full career. Some of their stories will reveal how lucky we were. They will also lead you to laugh and maybe even cry. Every day we served brought another set of unbelievable life experiences. We hope that you and others can enjoy this book about the ‘Thin Lines’ that we served in. Because the stories are ‘unvarnished’ we have done very little editing. Therefore, you will find a variety of writing styles and in many cases some ‘colorful’ language. Be prepared. The personal writing styles tend to reveal the real personas of the authors. And with the ‘bios’ you will get to know us all a little better. Keep in mind that these are all true stories of local law enforcement in the early 70’s to early 2000’s. This period of law enforcement in Clark County Washington State saw us evolve from a small, rural type of policing to a large, more urbanized, community oriented policing culture. And in one sense we also evolved from the ‘wild and wooly’ days of law enforcement to a thoroughly modern and professional time in our history. The evolution is well documented in the stories shared here. There is currently no more challenging time in our history, that we can remember, for emergency service personnel. Yet we continue to encourage people to consider a career in emergency services. It does indeed take a special kind of person with a special type of courage to step up to serve our communities. Hopefully, our shared stories will help motivate some readers to consider such a career. Thank you to the dozens of ‘authors’ who stepped up to share their individual experiences serving our community during this era. This was not easy for many. At the very least we have created a diary of sorts that we can all reference to helps us remember those who served. Doug Maas, Retired, CCSO/VPD 1972-2000
