F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American novelist and short story writer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. His most famous works include The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald was an ardent reader in his youth, and began writing stories while still in high school. After graduating from Princeton University in 1917, he joined the US Army and was stationed in Alabama, where he worked on his first novel, This Side of Paradise. The novel, which was published in 1920, was an immediate success and established Fitzgerald as a major literary figure. In the following years, he gained international fame for his work, writing a number of novels and short stories, including The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night. His work, which often explored the themes of youth, beauty, love and disillusionment, was deeply influential in the development of modern American literature. Fitzgerald's life was often marked by personal tragedy, including the death of his daughter and his own struggles with alcoholism. He and his wife, Zelda, lived a life of glamour and excess, but their marriage disintegrated in the 1930s. Fitzgerald died at the age of 44 in 1940, in Hollywood. His work continues to be studied and admired by readers and scholars around the world.
