In one volume, two of T. S. Eliot's early and most influential publications -- Prufrock and Other Observations, Eliot's 1917 collection of twelve poems, including his ground-breaking modernist masterpiece that took the poetry world by storm, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, and The Waste Land, Eliot's 1922 magnum opus.
T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) was a Nobel Prize-winning poet, critic, and playwright, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He is regarded as one of the most influential modernist poets of the 20th century. Eliot's works are known for their complex engagement with literature, culture, and philosophy, as well as their exploration of themes of alienation, disillusionment, and despair.
Eliot attended Harvard University, where he studied philosophy and literature. He published his first poem in the Harvard Advocate in 1909. After graduating from Harvard in 1910, Eliot moved to England and began his career as a poet and critic. In 1915, he published his first book of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations. This collection of poems, which featured innovative free verse and experimental poetic forms, established Eliot as a leader of the modernist movement.
In 1922, Eliot published his most famous poem, The Waste Land. This long poem, which features references to literature and philosophy, is considered one of the great works of modernist poetry. Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 for his "outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry." He continued to write poetry and criticism until his death in 1965.
Eliot's influence on modern poetry, literature, and culture is undeniable. His works remain hugely popular today, and his influence can be seen in the works of many contemporary poets and writers. Eliot's works are essential reading for anyone interested in modernist literature.
