Wind Beneath the Pines - 5051

Shirley Thacker has always been an avid reader and wordsmith. Her connection to writing has evolved over time. Teaching Muti-Age Classes of K-2 students for ten years helped her recognize the importance of writing in the early years of school. Writing was developmental and perfect for all students no matter their age or reading level. Shirley sought out and attended many conferences to learn more about her writing for students. She used writing, cooperative learning, and project based learning as her influences in her teaching when applying for National Board Certification which she received in 2003. Her husband, Rich, gave her the idea that she should write a book about school, life, family, faith, and more. He enjoyed the sound the wind made in their pine trees. He likened it to the stories and conversations that floated around the kitchen table or on the front porch. When Rich passed away, Shirley wanted to write his story for Hospice. More conferences were attended. She wrote her story while completing work with Indiana Writing Project at Ball State University. Shirley is definitely a lifelong learner. She is learning more about poetry, memoir, and nonfiction children’s books. Sharing writing with others brings her joy, just like the wind beneath her pines.
